Say hello to Suzanne!
Suzanne is a qualified nurse and has been a voluntary client at our Morphett Vale office for over 3 years, and despite the many chronic conditions she lives with, and the difficulties it causes her, Suzanne has found great success in her life through participating in her community and maintaining sustainable employment where she can (and does) prosper!
Suzanne’s health needs go on for longer than your average shopping list, from being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which lead to her needing an ileostomy – a surgical procedure that diverts the small bowel to an external opening and a stoma which needs to be maintained several times daily. As well as living with Graves’ Disease – which causes an overactive thyroid, rheumatoid arthritis – which causes pain and trouble with gripping in her hands, and chronic depression. These conditions mean that Suzanne needs to be constantly aware of her heart rate and blood pressure, her fluid intake and temperature levels, and must move and work slowly, and take regular breaks while also dealing with, at times, severe pain.
If that sounds like an overwhelming amount for an individual person to deal with, that’s because it is! But Suzanne is so much more than her medical diagnoses, and she knows that her worth is calculated based on her capabilities and her impact in her community, not by the limitations cause by her disabilities.
With support from Mobo, Suzanne obtained her First Aid Training and Manual Handing Certificate, her nurse’s registration, White Card, necessary work clothing and PPE, as well as funds for her food and petrol. With all that in hand, we referred Suzanne to a cleaning role with Possible Recruitment, and to a nursing role within a nursing agency – both of which she was successful in!
Suzanne is 24 weeks and counting of engaging in meaningful employment and is thriving in her work environments. As well as this, Suzanne has taken up coaching a senior netball team at Reynella, is on her Netball Club’s committee as a Youth Safety Officer. Life is busy for Suzanne, and while she must work slowly and take frequent breaks, her numerous medical conditions couldn’t stop her from pursuing and achieving her dreams in employment and in life. Suzanne’s is a powerful story of strength in herself and her dreams, and her capabilities beyond the difficulties that life has handed her, and she’s doing remarkably!
